Your best future customer is already shopping today — just at a different store. Someone who just bought premium running shoes is very likely to buy good socks, a water bottle or a fitness tracker. None of those brands competes with the shoe brand. All of them want that shopper.
That's the idea behind cross-brand partnerships: non-competing brands that share an audience help each other grow.
Why partnerships work for D2C brands
- Trust transfers. A recommendation that arrives with a purchase feels like a perk, not an ad.
- The timing is right. Shoppers who just bought are in buying mode.
- The cost is low. You're trading attention you already have instead of buying new attention.
Step 1: Pick the right partners
Good partners have three things in common with you:
- Same shopper, different product. Skincare and haircare. Shoes and socks. Puzzles and board games.
- Similar price point. A ₹4,000 product and a ₹200 product rarely share a buyer mindset.
- No overlap. If there's any chance they sell what you sell, skip them.
Step 2: Agree on a simple exchange
Keep the first deal simple:
- each brand gives the other an exclusive discount code,
- each brand shows that code to its customers at an agreed place — order confirmation email, packaging insert or Thank You page,
- both track orders by coupon code and UTM link.
Step 3: Place the offer at the best moment
Where you show a partner offer matters more than anything else. The highest-intent moment is right after checkout, on the Thank You page — the shopper has just paid and is still engaged. We cover why that moment is so valuable in How Shopify Stores Get New Customers From Their Thank You Page.
Step 4: Measure and keep the winners
After 30 days, compare partners on:
- orders received from each partner's code,
- how many of those were first-time customers, and
- how many were delivered, not returned.
Keep the partners that send real customers. Replace the rest. To compare this channel fairly with your paid ads, use cost per new customer — explained in Pay Per Sale vs Pay Per Click.
The hard part: doing this at scale
One partnership is easy. Ten is a part-time job: finding brands, agreeing terms, swapping codes, checking reports and chasing payouts.
That's the problem a shopper exchange solves. Moby connects your store to a network of non-competing partner brands through a single "Claim Your Gift" button on your Thank You page:
- your leaving shoppers discover exclusive offers from partner brands on Moby Rewards,
- your offer is shown to shoppers who completed a purchase at another Shopify store 5 seconds ago,
- you can block competing brands, and
- you pay commission only on net sales — tracked with UTM links and exclusive coupon codes.
Beyond partner stores, your offer can also reach an affiliate network of 30K+ creators and partner apps as a scratch card seen by 3.8 Mill+ transacting users. It's free to install and goes live in about 10 minutes — see how it works.
Start small
Pick two non-competing brands you already respect, swap codes for a month, and measure. If it works — and for most D2C stores it does — automate it.
