Shop Pay is coming to India: what it means for GoKwik, Shopflo and your checkout
Shopify is preparing to bring Shop Pay, its accelerated checkout, to India by the first quarter of 2027, sources told Inc42. Shopify hasn't confirmed the timeline publicly and didn't answer Inc42's questions. So read it as "expected early next year", not as a launch date.
If you run a Shopify store in India, it's still worth thinking through now. Checkout is where your ad spend either turns into an order or quietly dies. Here's what has actually been reported, what nobody knows yet, and what you can do before anything changes.
What Shop Pay is, and why India doesn't have it yet
Shop Pay lets shoppers save their payment, shipping and contact details once and check out faster on any store that uses it. Shopify claims it can deliver up to 50% higher conversion than guest checkout (Inc42). That is Shopify's own number from its existing markets, not an Indian benchmark.
In India, Shop Pay would likely sit alongside Shopify Checkout as an optional faster layer (Inc42). It isn't here today because Shopify Payments isn't available in India; the country isn't on Shopify’s supported-countries list, so Indian stores use third-party gateways and checkout apps. Shop Pay usually runs on Shopify Payments, which is the likely reason it has been missing.
To get around that, Shopify is in talks with payment orchestration platforms to integrate payment service providers, according to Inc42. No partner names are public.
What is reported, and what is still open
Reported (by Inc42, from unnamed sources)
- Timing: by Q1 2027. Not confirmed by Shopify.
- Payments: talks with payment orchestration platforms to plug in Indian payment providers.
- Pricing: not confirmed. Inc42 notes that merchants will compare checkout charges, payment processing fees and Shopify's transaction fees together.
Not known yet
- Cash on delivery. No source mentions COD support.
- UPI. Not mentioned. It would presumably come through the payment partners, but nobody has said so.
- Address autofill from a phone number. Not mentioned for Shop Pay India. Today this is something the local checkouts are known for.
- RTO and fraud tools. Not mentioned.
- Merchant pricing. Free, bundled or per transaction, and whether Shopify's fees for third-party gateways change.
The checkouts in the firing line
Inc42 names GoKwik, Shopflo, Razorpay Magic Checkout, Shiprocket Fastrr Checkout and Cashfree Payments as the players Shop Pay would compete with. They don't all face the same risk.
An unnamed person from the payment gateway industry told Inc42: "GoKwik and Shopflo would need to find how to compete against a giant like Shopify. For others, checkout services contribute a small portion of revenue."
Neither GoKwik nor Shopflo is checkout-only, though. Inc42 points out that GoKwik also sells customer engagement, shopper identification, advertising and returns management. Shopflo is now part of Pine Labs, which announced the acquisition in April 2026. For Razorpay, Shiprocket and Cashfree, checkout is one product among many.
Umair Mohammad, founder of Nitro Commerce, put it in perspective for Inc42: "Shopify will definitely have an advantage given that it is such a big brand. But more importantly, merchants will have more options... Shop Pay's entry does not automatically mean that other checkout services will struggle." He added that local checkouts do more than save addresses, pointing to RTO intelligence and payment orchestration, and that "a lot will also depend on pricing and how they position Shop Pay."
Shopify's edge, and the local edge
Shopify brings its existing Indian merchant base, a native integration and brand trust. The local players bring years of India-specific features. Inc42 sums it up: success "will depend on whether its native integration platform can outperform local checkout rivals on pricing, conversion and localised features" (Inc42).
Free, or better? How Shopify could play it
There are two broad roads. Shopify can compete on price, making Shop Pay cheap or bundled for Shopify merchants and letting convenience do the rest. Or it can compete on product, beating local checkouts on conversion, address quality and COD control.
Price alone is a weak argument for most founders. When you choose a checkout, the checkout fee is one line. The gateway fee, Shopify's transaction fee and the cost of every order that comes back sit right next to it. A cheaper checkout that lets through more fake COD orders isn't cheaper.
The India test: COD, UPI and messy addresses
Abroad, Shop Pay grew on saved cards. India works differently. Local checkouts prefill addresses from phone numbers, support COD and UPI, and work to reduce RTO; one analysis argues Shop Pay will have to adapt to UPI and COD rather than rely on stored cards (TIGI).
The stakes are real. Shipway's FY25 ShipNotes data found that nearly 26% of non-prepaid (COD) orders were returned to origin, against under 2% of prepaid orders (BW Disrupt). A checkout that is fast but can't spot a risky COD order, or can't make sense of "near the temple, 2nd lane", will cost you more than it saves.
What to do now, before anything launches
- Know your real checkout cost. Add the checkout fee, gateway fee, any Shopify transaction fee and your RTO cost, then divide by delivered orders, not placed orders.
- Measure conversion and RTO by payment method. You need a clean baseline to judge any new checkout fairly.
- Check your current contract. Look for lock-ins and notice periods, so you're free to test when the time comes.
- Plan a test, not a switch. If Shop Pay does launch, try it on part of your traffic and compare delivered orders, not just checkout completion.
- Fix what you control today. COD confirmation on WhatsApp, prepaid nudges and clear delivery dates help whichever checkout you end up using.
