AI for Indian D2C brands: 6 practical workflows for support, creatives and ops

By Mohit Gill, Founder, Moby · · For Indian Shopify store owners

Most Indian D2C teams are small. The same three or four people answer customer chats, write product pages, brief creatives, chase couriers and read the numbers. AI won't fix a weak product or a bad offer. But it can take hours of repeat work off that team every week, if you use it in the right places.

There's a cost reason too. Ad costs are rising, and creative is doing more of the work. "Content differentiation is getting harder, while content fatigue is increasing," Smytten co-founder Swagat Sarangi told Storyboard18. Brands need more creatives, tested more often. That is exactly the kind of volume work AI is good at.

Here are six workflows that most Shopify stores can start this month, mostly with tools already inside the Shopify admin.

1. Support: let AI draft, let a human send

Shopify Inbox can generate suggested replies to customer messages from your store information. They are on by default for eligible stores, and staff review and edit them before sending (Shopify Help Center). There is also an Inbox agent that can answer customers automatically if you turn it on (Shopify Help Center).

Two things matter for Indian stores. First, suggested replies are only available in English, and your store and admin need to be in English. Hinglish and regional-language chats still need a person. Second, the replies are only as good as what your store says. Shopify notes that suggestions improve when your store has the information customers ask about.

Workflow: write down your COD rules, delivery timelines by region, return and exchange window, and size guidance on your store pages. Then let AI draft the routine "where is my order" and "can I pay cash" replies, and keep humans on complaints.

2. Product pages and content

Sidekick, Shopify's AI assistant, can write product descriptions, blog posts, store pages and Shopify Messaging emails from inside the page you're editing (Shopify Help Center). It works with your store's context and shows changes for your review before applying them (Shopify Help Center).

Workflow: give it the facts it can't guess, such as fabric, fit, care, what's in the box and your delivery promise. Ask for short sentences in Indian English. Then edit for your brand voice. AI is fast at the first draft; it shouldn't be the last one.

3. Creatives: more variations from one good shoot

Shopify's Tinker is a free mobile app with more than 100 AI tools for creating images, videos and brand assets, including product photography and marketing videos (Shopify Help Center). Sidekick can also create images, and the file editor can swap an image's background.

Workflow: do one proper product shoot, then use AI for backgrounds, crops and format sizes for different placements. Keep the product itself real. Never generate fake customer photos, fake reviews or results you can't back up. Shoppers notice, and it erodes the trust you're paying ads to build.

4. Ops: automate the boring checks

Shopify Flow is a free automation app on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans. It watches your store for events and runs actions in response, built from triggers, conditions and actions (Shopify Help Center). It isn't AI on its own, but it pairs well with it: AI helps you decide what to automate, and Flow runs it every time.

Workflow ideas: tag high-value COD orders so your team confirms them before dispatch, alert someone when a bestseller runs low, and tag repeat customers so they get a different follow-up from first-timers.

5. Analysis: ask your store questions in plain language

You can ask Sidekick to analyse data, manage orders or edit products in everyday language (Shopify Help Center). Shopify also lets you connect third-party AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot to your store, and you control what each one can access (Shopify Help Center).

Workflow: keep a short list of Monday questions. Which products were returned most last month? Which collections sold to repeat customers? Which discount codes brought first orders? Check anything surprising against your reports before acting on it.

6. Ads: let the machine test, keep the angle human

Ad platforms are automating more of the targeting. Meta "has pushed almost everyone onto Advantage+ automated campaigns," theblurr's Gopa Menon told Storyboard18, and he advises leaning on first-party data from CRM, WhatsApp and the Conversions API while treating creative as the real lever.

Workflow: decide the idea and the offer yourself. Use AI to produce variations of hooks, headlines and formats, and let the platform test them. Your judgement on what to say is the part that's hard to copy.

Guardrails worth writing down

A simple 30-day start

  1. Week 1: clean up store policies and turn on suggested replies in Inbox.
  2. Week 2: rewrite your top 20 product pages with Sidekick, then edit them yourself.
  3. Week 3: set up two or three Flow automations for COD checks and low stock.
  4. Week 4: make creative variations from your best-performing ad and test them.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to pay extra for AI tools in Shopify?
Shopify says many AI features in the admin are available at no additional cost, but availability varies by plan, device and language. Check what your plan includes.
Can AI answer my customers in Hindi?
Shopify Inbox suggested replies are currently English only, and the store and admin must be in English. Keep a person on Hindi, Hinglish and regional-language chats.
Is it safe to connect ChatGPT or other AI tools to my store?
Shopify lets you control what data each connected tool can see and what it can do. Give each tool only the access it needs and review its changes.
Will AI creatives hurt my brand?
Not if the product stays real and a person approves every ad. Avoid AI-made reviews, faces or results you can't back up.
